Our Process

The soap making process begins with lye and rendered lard from Iowa-raised hogs. The mixture is stirred for four hours before it is the right consistency to pour into molds, which Shannon and her father designed and created. The soap continues to cure for two weeks, to ensure that the caustic lye is blended with the lard to make it gentle on the skin. Each bar is then carefully cut, packaged, and distributed to retail outlets.

Our History

Before she started Little White Lye Soap, Shannon Bardole spent five years at Living History Farms in Urbandale serving as Broom Shop Supervisor and 1900 Farm Domestic Supervisor after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor's degree in family services.

Shannon was inspired by the work she had done at Living History Farms and wanted to find a way to bridge the gap between that world and today's.  In December 2006 she started up her soap shop which she operates from her Ames home.  As the business continues to grow, she enjoys the new opportunities to create relationships with retailers and customers due to a locally handcrafted high-quality product.

Shannon and Little White Lye Soap remain committed to providing the community an affordable, unique, functional, and pleasant alternative to mass produced soap products.
